Product Description
A born food-lover, raised in California on “the best Mexican food in the country” and her father’s “traditional Southern soul food,” Alicia C. Simpson couldn’t imagine giving up her favorite dishes to become vegan. Animal-free food might be healthier, but could it match the tastes of home—like fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, or a bowl of chili? Three years after Alicia took the vegan plunge, Quick and Easy Vegan Comfort Food answers that question with a resounding “yes!”

Here is the essential cookbook for any of America’s more than 6 million vegans who miss the down-home tastes they remember (or want to try), or for vegetarians and even meat-eaters who want to add more plant-based foods to their diets, but don’t know where to start. Comfort-seeking cooks will find:
  • Easy-to-prepare, animal-free versions of classics like Spicy Buffalo Bites, Ultimate Nachos, Baked Ziti and more
  • 65 delicious combinations for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with flavors from around the world, like “Chinese Take-In” or “Tijuana Torpedo”
  • Everything you need to know to start your vegan pantry, and why being vegan is easier, less expensive, and more delicious than you might think.

With spirit and style, Alicia shows just how easy—yes, and comforting—vegan food can be.

2 out of 5 stars a few good recipes, but...   July 28, 2010
hils
I was really disappointed by this book! I read a lot of great reviews, but when I got around to cooking with it myself, I found most of the recipes to be overly simplistic. There are some gems in here, to be sure, but I don't think the author really had enough recipes to justify a whole cookbook, so she started throwing in some real no brainers. There's a recipe for "dinner salad" that just lists 5 or 6 basic salad ingredients (seriously?). "Mini Pizza's" are just english muffins, pizza sauce, fake meat & fake cheese. There are probably 15 recipes like that... super duper basic things that anyone can think up on their own.

Another concern was the use of processed food items. Far too many recipes relied on expensive substitutes like fake meat and cheese. She even calls for specific brands at times, one of which she recommends ordering from the internet. I'm more interested in cooking with ingredients I can easily access for a reasonable price.

If you are JUST STARTING OUT as a vegan and cook, this book might be helpful for you. If you are a seasoned vegan, pass this one by. Veganomicon is far superior!

5 out of 5 stars comforting nutrition info   June 13, 2010

I just got this book, read through most of it and I think it's going to live up to it's high rating.

I've only made the Tacos Pecadillo so far but it was excellent. My husband thought so, too.

I was afraid that the calories and fat would be too high as it is "comfort food" so I entered the info into [edit: an online nutrition database which must remain nameless]. Took a little tinkering with their database (which does include TVP!) and came up with these numbers assuming her recipe is four servings (I actually prefer to stuff them fatter and eat fewer taco shells, the least nutritious part of this recipe):
475 calories, 233 calories from fat, total fat 25.9 g (40%),Saturated fat 3.8 g, trans fat 1.9 grams, cholesterol 0 g, sodium 364 mg, total carbs 47.3 g, dietary fiber 12.2 g, sugars 10.7 g, protein 18.6 g, vitamin A 67% RDA, vitamin C 57%, iron 25%, calcium 16%.

Not too bad for comfort food!

I have a hobby of collecting cookbooks, mainly vegan and vegetarian cookbooks. I will honestly say that this is by far the best of them all. Everything I've tried thus far is delicious. The mac and cheese is superb (thank God I actually found a vegan mac and cheese recipe that I like---I actually think it's even better than the non-vegan version!) I also made the breakfast sausage and blueberry muffins, both with great success. I can't wait to try more.

Now, I have a LOT of cookbooks, and I think I can say that this will easily top the list. I hope the author plans on writing more in the future. If she does, she can count on a repeat customer.

5 out of 5 stars A-MAZING!!!!! OH, I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THIS BOOK!   May 18, 2010

Holy smackers this is a good book!!! Flavor-full and cruelty-free.

Where do I begin??? I started out with the Sweet Potato Waffle recipe because I have complete and absolute love for pancakes and waffles, but oh my god...the warm 'melt-in-your-mouth' goodness of the cinnamon, vanilla, brown sugar, and sweet potato was almost too much. But when I took the first bite, I just closed my eyes and smiled a deep, heartfelt smile of sheer satisfaction. Adding a small pat of Earth Balance vegan 'butter' just about took it over the top. I couldn't believe I made them. Fantastic.

Then I decided to try the Fool-Your-Friends Tacos. I figured "Meatless taco? Yeah right." So I began to prepare the recipe. The easiest taco recipe ever -- and QUICK! Less than 15 minutes, they were ready to eat. I never told my husband, the consummate carnivore, that the tacos contained no meat. He took one bite and his eyes rolled in delight. He hadn't even swallowed, but he couldn't stop talking about what he was chewing. He wolfed it down and then I decided to come clean. I revealed to him that he had just scarfed a 'vegan taco'. His expression sank at the deception. And, with a food-stained mustache, he conceded, "That was a darn good taco. Make me 2 more." Convinced I was on to something, I decided to prepare and sample one myself, and boy, let me tell you...Taco Bell just lost one of its most enthusiastic supporters. Forget Fool-Your-Friends Tacos. I call them Fool-Yourself Tacos because you'll never believe you ate a taco that good without having to 'run for the border'. She [the author] says you'll lick the plate. And after wiping the sour cream and taco sauce from my forehead, I can say that I surely did.
